The present research focused on knowing in an exploratory-descriptive way the preferences and consumption of mass media, especially television, on behalf of young people from Bucaramanga. We also inquired about social and cultural aspects of the object population as well about their use of free time. This qualitative-type study used a questionnaire as a tool for data collection which was randomly applied to 709 high-school students of the city. In the results obtained, it is remarkable that the free-time activity of greater importance is “Listening to music” (20%), followed by “Hanging out with family” (18%) and in fifth place “Watching television” (12%). “Reduced” is the word that applies for the reception and acquaintance of the Regional Channel called TRO (38%) and the local channels (23%) that are broadcasted in Bucaramanga. An appropriate atmosphere for the construction of spaces centered in the formation of critical viewers is evidenced.
