This document presents a control strategy for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) intended to maximize the machine efficiency. This strategy reduces the motor losses without disturbing its dynamic performance. The technique is based on a mathematical model aimed at estimating losses and calculating the current intensity necessary to produce the desired electromagnetic torque so as to reduce the energy employed in the process. Several simulations and experiments were performed in order to test the validity of the proposed strategy and the results are presented. The tests confirm that it is possible to reach an enhancement of efficiency up to 2.6% in comparison with traditional control strategies in nominal operating conditions.
