Cervical cancer results from persistent infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). Global health policies are based on screening programs to reduce the incidence of cancer. Tests have been implemented to detect HPV and thus clarify ambiguous cytomorphological reports such as squamous cell atypia of undetermined significance (ASC-US), to optimize the management of these cytological results. Objectives: to establish the frequency of high risk HPV by means of molecular test in women diagnosed with ASC-US by conventional cytology in the Hospital of San José de Bogotá DC. Methods: series of cases with conventional cytology, colposcopy and HPV test, followed up at six months. Results: of 121 patients, 16% had ASC-US diagnosis and in 15% of these, the high-risk HPV test was positive. Conclusions: the frequency of HPV in cases with ASCUS was 15%, comparable with that reported in the literature, and in the entire sample, HPV was 11.5%. Of the risk factors, no relationship was found with early onset of sexual relations and the number of sexual partners.
