Colombia is one of the richest countries in species of butterflies in the planet. The numerous scientific publications about these lepidopterans contrast with the small number of works intended for non-specialists. With the publication of this profusely illustrated book the Universidad del Rosario wishes to introduce the complex world of these insects to the reading public. It describes what a butterfly is and how it develops; why butterflies are so varied and abundant in Colombia; why are scientists interested in them; and how the current threats to biodiversity affect them. And, by documenting the beauty, diversity, and ecological importance of butterflies the editors hope to raise public awareness regarding the urgency to preserve forests, brush-woods, and vegetation where butterflies inhabit. In addition, the University presents the terrain it recently acquired for its José Celestino Mutis Experimental Station, where the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will continue researching butterflies and other subjects.
