Los Sistemas de Informacion Geografica (SIG) permiten encontrar soluciones a problematicas relacionadas con el territorio. La aplicacion de estos sistemas ha permitido la planificacion regional, asi como la organizacion y la gestion del espacio geografico. El presente articulo pretende dar a conocer la aplicacion de los SIG en el turismo, como una herramienta para potencializar nuevos destinos, principalmente aquellos que se situan en la periferia. En primer lugar, se contextualiza al lector sobre los SIG y las diferentes aplicaciones existentes para el manejo de la informacion. En segundo lugar, se presentan los SIG como una herramienta de analisis de informacion que facilita la planificacion turistica. En tercer lugar, se analiza la aplicacion de estos sistemas en el turismo en diferentes paises del mundo, lo que permite presentar algunos casos de exito. En cuarto lugar, se senala la contribucion de los SIG para potencializar el turismo en las zonas perifericas. Finalmente, se presentan algunas conclusiones. The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) aim at solving problems related to territories. This makes possible regional planning as well as organizing and managing the geographic space. In the case of the tourism sector, the GIS enhances planning through the knowledge given with respect to territories. The aim of this paper is to highlight the application of these systems for the promotion of new tourism destinations, including those in peripheral regions. Section 1 is a reminder about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and their use for information management. Then, section 2 explains which role can be given to GIS within the framework of tourism planning. Section 3 reviews some cases of such use worldwide. Section 4 explains why GIS can be seen as a tool to promote tourism in peripheral areas. Last, this work ends with some conclusions.
