BACKGROUND: Lifestyle and self-perception are important elements in sport performance. In Rugby most studies focus on the incidence and types of injuries, or the anthropometric and physiological profile of the athletes, but it is important to study other aspects that can influence the player´s performance. PURPOSE: Identify the relationship between lifestyle and self-perception of the physical condition in rugby players in Colombia. METHODS: 115 rugby players in 7 cities of Colombia were evaluated. Inclusion criteria were to be older than 18 years and one or more years of experience in Rugby practice. Lifestyle was assessed using the FANTASTIC questionnaire and self-perception of physical condition through the Internacional Fitness Scale (IFIS). The statistical analysis was performed with central tendency measures, standard deviation, t-student and Chi-square. RESULTS: The age average was 23.25 ± 3.79 years. 70% of the study population were males, 58% played at Backs position and 42% at Forwards position. 56.6% of the players reported a “Good” lifestyle with a score of 79.6 ± 8.9 points with no differences by sex. The total score average on lifestyle was significantly higher in Backs (77.7 ± 8.5 vs 81.2 ± 8.9; p = 0.017) such as in personality and nutrition domains according to the FANTASTIC instrument. Most players (63.4%) perceive as “Good” their fitness and its components measured by the IFIS. Statistically significant association according to the position on the field between the perception of strength in Forwards (p = 0.007) and speed in Backs (p = 0.000) was found. A significant relationship between higher scores of lifestyle and self-perception of cardiorespiratory endurance (p = 0.026), strength (p = 0.006), and speed (p = 0.001) was also found. CONCLUSION: It could be concluded that higher scores in lifestyle were associated with a better perception of the main components of fitness. Better perception of strength and speed were associated with Forwads and Backs respectively, according to the characteristics of the position on the field. Iti s necessary to continue conducting studies on the subject to deepen knowledge in this issues.
