This text offers readers a set of analyses on Colombian tendencies in science, technology, and innovation (STI), including discussions of several relevant factors such as the research community in Colombia and politics, the strong points of scientific research as evidenced by book production, investigative capacities, and human resources in Colombian universities, departmental capacities for the efficient distribution of royalties in STI, the relation between innovation and production in private enterprise, the dissemination of knowledge through patents, gender issues in the national science and technology system, proposals for the measurement and evaluation of the social appropriation of science and technology with specific analyses for the STI sector, and agriculture and innovation in the coffee sector. The authors all agree on the importance of combining quantitative and qualitative information to add value to available indicators. We hope this book will be helpful in the processes of STI appropriation, empowerment, and appreciation by different social sectors as a development strategy, helping Colombia progress toward a socioeconomic model based on knowledge and innovation.
