The challenge to design and manufacture machinery that is adaptable to production needs is a challenge that an organization should undertake on an ongoing basis in engineering. The independent study (Curso Proyecto) known as "Fundamental of Machine Elements" at EAFIT university, it is how students are prepared to take on this challenge using a defined methodological framework to provide them which direct their efforts to create value as a result of the integration of human resources and knowledge supported by technology. This particular paper presents results for projects wherein machinery were developed and constructed using CNC machines with an integrated focus of PLM detailing the scope, budget, resources, phases -all key tasks, with an eye to creating a functional prototype which is shared with different areas of the university and which were achieved in short periods of time that did not surpass 16 weeks. Additionally, the paper demonstrates how a strategy of shared knowledge within PLM helps transfer tools and strengths within an engineering project setting that can be used by seasoned engineers in the field of designing machinery for industrial use.
