This document presents the design, assessment, and benchmarking of a RFID reader system applied to vehicular traffic monitoring, which was developed as a part of an Intelligent Transportation System implemented in Chía, located in Cundinamarca, Colombia. The developed device is based on the Internet of things paradigm and is the technological base of several projects related with IoT and Wireless Sensor Networks. Additionally, the developed system is assessed according to a series of operational requirements and is benchmarked with other popular commercial solutions in this field. The developed device is the best and cheapest option in the comparison set.
