Amazonian societies of Brazil and Colombia make ample use of species belonging to the Myristicaceae family as medicines, hallucinogens and arrow poisons. Analysis of seven such species affored a large number of novel compounds, chiefly neolignans (coupling products of propenylphenols and allylphenols) and iryantherins (coupling products of dehydrochalcones and neolignans).
