The following article brings together the author’s reflections on his academic lived experience in teaching, research coordinating at the Faculty of Costume Design at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, and the partial results of his doctoral thesis entitled “Clothing as an artifact of design: contributions to a theory of costume design”. It fits the theme of epistemological and interdisciplinary approaches to design research proposed by the journal. The main focus is on reviewing the concepts needed to address the construction of a theory of costume design, which we propose finds its foundation in the question if clothing as an artifact of design requires a different study within the disciplinary field. To address this question, we will develop some of the main arguments why we believe that this consideration is valid and necessary in the following order: 1) presentation of some of the difficulties that reflection on clothing had to experience in the past fourteen years (2001-2015); 2) later, we will address the conditions costume design as a specialty of design should not forget; 3) but also the premises on which founds the basis of its autonomy regarding the other objectification; 4) we conclude with the proposal of a reflection on clothing within the design discipline field, contemplating its many dimensions as an artifact.
