The aim of this paper is to analyze the discursive constitution of “honest love” from the point of view of theology and canon law between the 16th and the 18th centuries in Mexico City. I understand “honest love” as a model of love imposed by the Roman Catholic Church to validate its model of monogamous, indissoluble and heterosexual marriage, and I approach it through the study of some of its discursive practices, the most important of these the celebration of marriages of conscience.
