Summary National herbaria have been defined recently on the basis of what is known about herbaria in the northern hemisphere, and strong emphasis is placed on their size. Little or no importance has been given to herbaria located in other parts of the world. Updated information on Latin American National Herbaria is given in this paper, and an outline of their many important functions is included. A new definition of “national herbarium” is proposed to include these and similar institutions around the world.
