A direct current distribution microgrid represents a practical solution to efficiency problems of existing AC electrical grid. It can integrate more effectively different forms of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic cells, wind generators and fuel cells. This scheme has specific issues given its DC nature in regard to efficient operation and protection systems. Additionally, control methods commonly used to integrate distributed generation and loads into a microgrid with energy storage elements must be adapted accordingly to the DC own requirements. Main topics of this scheme are currently being developed and researched, whereby a survey on principal research projects and prospective on DC distribution microgrids is presented.
