The chest gland of the tropical American bat Phyllostomus discolor is present and functional in males and vestigial in females. It is a large, sebaceous holocrine gland of the simple type. The secretion causes a strong odor which probably serves as a means of recognition and aids in the location of the daytime roost of the colony.
