Recent publications have challenged the conventional view of the benign nature of the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection. The clinical manifestations are highly variable and can be severe in some cases. Studies suggest that the severe form of CHIKV infection may be associated with multiple organ failure, hepatitis, meningitis, nephritis, encephalitis, bullous dermatitis, myocarditis, cardiac arrhythmias, among others.
