This paper aims to discuss the process of meaning-making in a charge by Angeli, focusing upon the representation of extreme poverty in the multimodal articulation of verbal and visual semiosis. To analyze how images and verbal texts are organized to produce meaning effects in the text, we use the theoretical and methodological assumptions of Visual Design Grammar (Kress and van Leewen, 2006) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 2004), combined with Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 2003, 2010; Ramalho and Resende, 2011).
