An instrument is described for producing accurate three-dimensional maps of various plant forms. Allied with a flexible data logging system, the instrument has been shown to increase biologists' data-collecting capability by a factor of between 10 and 100 over manual methods. Substantial improvements in the quality and continuity of the measurements, as well as sheer quantity, have made it possible to produce plant maps which would not otherwise be feasible.
