The aim of this article is to analyze the psychiatric arguments that explained the criminal insanity of Enrique Rode in the context of the first biological psychiatry in Mexico. We intend to show that psychiatric controversies about the Rode case contributed to the process of legitimation of Porfirian physicians as experts in understanding mental illness during the last third of the nineteenth century in Mexico.
