This paper develops an approach to the causes of the low permanence of Colombian small and medium enterprises (SME) in the market, it is presented as an advanced result of the project “Exploratory study on information management and ICT application in the decision making processes of small enterprises in Bogota”, approved and funded by the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia in 2010. According to research from 1990 and 2009, one of the causes of failure of SME was the lack of long term strategic planning to help orient their processes towards a global market. This internationalization requires, among other features: 1) the organization of processes and information to make really adequate decisions and improve competitiveness, and 2) to adopt both production and information technologies. These two aspects are directly related to communication since the data fluxes and adequate use of ICT by an organization both depend on communications, this reflects on good strategic courses.
