The case of a nine-year old child diagnosed with aenemia, mielodysplasic syndrome and bacterial endocarditis, was presented in the Erazmo Meoz Hospital in Cúcuta between the 22nd of November and the 18th of December, 1995. A Gram positive bacillus was isolated through haemoculture, initially identified as being Listena monocytogenes. The isolate was sent to the INS Microbiology Reference Laboratory for confirmation where it was identified as being the non-toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae, biotype gravk. Follow-up was not possibie with this patient as his parents requested his voluntary release from the institution.
