Traffic accident data in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania were reviewed for the years 1999-2001 to show the changes in traffic accidents for those years and to explore possible underlying causes. The results show an increase in accidents from 1999 to 2001, with speeding, careless driving and mechanical car defects being the three most contributing factors. In addition, it was discovered that most of the traffic accidents occurred during the daytime, perhaps due to the large amount of traffic congestion in the region. The authors feel that due to the increasing number of traffic accidents, road safety programs are urgently needed.
