Arctic ambient noise is characterized by the presence of transients due to ice cracking. The present document reports the results of an investigation into the effect on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of clipping ambient noise time series to which artificial sinusoid signals had been added. Because the ambient noise contains more power at low frequencies than at high frequencies, it was deemed necessary to bandpass filter the time series before clipping. The effect of clipping on SNR was found to depend strongly on the center frequency of the bandpass filter. At low frequency (f≤40 Hz) the SNR was not greatly affected by clipping. At higher frequencies (80 Hz ≤f≤1280 Hz), however, clipping was found to improve the SNR, by as much as 5 dB.
