MILGRAM, NORMAN A.; SHORE, MILTON F.; and MALASKY, CHARLOTTE. Linguistic and Thematic Variables in Recall of a Story by Disadvantaged Children. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1971, 42, 637-640. An illustrated story was read aloud to disadvantaged and advantaged kindergarten and first-grade children who then retold the story in their words. The oral productions were analyzed in terms of linguistic categories (number of words and sentences) and thematic categories (story-relevant sentences and essential themes). While advantaged children surpassed disadvantaged on all 4 measures, the differences favoring the advantaged children were greater on the linguistic than on the thematic categories.
