Resultados de endoscopia alta en pacientes con sospecha de cuerpos extraños en faringe y tracto digestivo superior. Análisis de casos presentados en Villavicencio (Colombia)
Introduction: foreign bodies are a common problem in the emergency room in both children and adults. This article describes foreign body cases taken from the database of the Gastroenterology Unit of Villavicencio. Objective: describe the frequency, type, location and removal procedures of foreign bodies in the superior digestive tract in adults and children treated between 2005 and 2013. Methodol-ogy: results of 104 upper digestive endoscopies conducted on patients of the Gastroenterology Unit remitted for having a foreign body in the pharynx or esophagus were analyzed. Data collection and descrip-tion of statistics were carried out in Microsoft Excel 2010. Results: 52 50%) foreign bodies were found in the total analyzed cases; the other cases showed negative results as for foreign bodies. In 104 analyzed re-ports, 13 cases were children (25%) and 39 were adults (75%). The most frequent foreign bodies in children were coins (5 cases); in adults, bone fragments (19 cases), followed by fish bones (15 cases). The esophagus was the most affected area, with 9 cases in children and 17 cases in adults. Endoscopy was useful for removal in 37 (71%) adults and children. Conclusions: foreign bodies are a common problem in this area. Even if in most cases the problem is successfully treated, it is important to care-fully analyze patients claiming a suspected foreign body for appropriate treatment. Case law is similar to other national or international locations.
