Abstract 1. 1. The correct diagnosis between total or partial rupture is necessary for adequate treatment. 2. 2. Stress X-rays are advised in all swollen painful fingers after trauma. 3. 3. Surgical repair is recommended for the total rupture of the collateral ligament with instability of the joint. 4. 4. The amount of damage to the articular surfaces produced by the initial trauma and by the delay of treatment influences the final results.
