Environmental Education (EE) has had a significant growth as a response to the need for structural social change. Its foundations are found in both international and local standards, and its conceptual development has been extensive and complex. The aim of this article is to explore some statutory and conceptual elements underpinning EE, and its adoption in curricular terms in Colombia. The method used is limited to documentary analysis reason why a wide range of information was addressed from which inferences were made according to the purpose of the article. Among the results, it was found that EE has been taken according to the characteristics of each historical period, particularly since the 70’s in the twentieth century with a wealth of international and national standards, and that its implementation from school should respond to a joint and collective reflection of all school actors, both in its design and implementation.
