This paper seeks a historical exploration of some of the main arguments and the anthropological debate associated with the recognition of black people’s ethnicity in the multicultural conjuncture occurred in Colombia in the early 1990s. It will highlight the enunciation of violence towards ethnic groups as an antecedent and the criticism of a potential bias of the process which risked hiding the exercise of Afro-Colombian ethnicity focusing mainly on indigenous identities.
