Regreening of Arid and Semiarid Areas by Using Produced Water from Oil Production in the Development of Agroindustrial Projects of Biodiesel Production
Abstract The north of Huila state has an extension of 4360 km2 with of arid and semi-arid area conditions where the main limitation for agricultural production is both water deficit and low development of the dry ecosystem soils. Two hundred oil wells which produce 125.000 BWPD are located in this area; a 72% of this water is required for being re-injected to maintain reservoir pressure, but the remaining of water cannot be spilled out due to its chemical features that can contaminate the environment, for this reason the remaining water must be also re-injected. The strategy of re-greening of arid and semi-arid areas with the use of produced water from oil production is possible through the treatment by reverse osmosis in a scheme continuous of reactor tanks that allow the removal of salts, chlorides and dissolved metals in water, and then can be use in the irrigation of 142 hectares of Jatropha crop for the Bio-Diesel production that is a cheaper alternative than water re-injection. With this research program ECOPETROL S.A., Huila-Tolima Operation District, supports the ONU's initiative of combating the desertification because it contributes to the recovery of arid and semi-arid areas through the development of environmentally friendly projects; also, it converts a problem for oil industry into a innovation solution that creates agricultural Jobs, news sources of renewable energy, improve of life quality of the population using technological applications in severe environmental conditions.
