The recent report 1 that the Fe K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) recorded from FeTiO 3 are best interpreted in terms of the presence of Fe 3+ is erroneous. The X-ray absorption near edge structure recorded at both the Fe K- and Ti K-edges are consistent with the presence of Fe 2+ and Ti 4+ . The results are endorsed by 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The compound FeTiO 3 is accurately formulated as Fe 2+ Ti 4+ O 3 .
