Contingency theory recognizes that an important factor of survival of the organizations is their attitude to adopt diverse type of structural configurations depending on the environmental changes. This article attempts to show that the pragmatic character of the contributions of this approach, sustained in the concept of Adjustment, is convenient to explain how organizations fulfill their aims of survival and growth, but it is incomplete to explain how they can fulfill their social function. This affirmation is illustrated from an analysis on the process of emergence and proliferation of the technical and technological programs in management in Colombia.
