Este articulo tiene como objetivo estudiar la relacion entre la educacion y la proteccion de mujeres en la primera mitad del siglo XIX y descubrir quienes fueron las mujeres «con letras». Para lograr esto hemos descrito las instituciones que educaron y protegieron a las mujeres en Guadalajara durante el periodo colonial y hemos examinado a las colegialas que se educaron en una de estas instituciones (el Colegio de Ninas de San Diego en el siglo XIX, de 1803 hasta 1860. Despues hemos estudiado la relacion entre la educacion y la proteccion con base en la alfabetizacion funcional que habian adquirido y terminamos con el estudio de la correspondencia de las colegialas que muestra las voces de estas mujeres, que hablan de la educacion y proteccion que recibieron en el Colegio. This essay has a purpose: to study the relationship between the education and the protection of women during the first half of the nineteenth century and discover who were the women «with letters», In order to achieve this goal wehave described the institutions that protected and educated women in the colonial period and we have examined the schoolgirls that were educated in one of these institutions (el Colegio de Ninas de San Diego) since 1803 till 1860. We also have studied the relationship between education and protection on the basis of the functional literacy the schoolgirls had acquired. Finally we have analyzed the correspondence of them which make us hear the voices of the women that speak about the teachings and protection they were granted in the in the Colegio.
