In spite of the diversity of life-zones in the Caribbean, over half of the vegetation is found in the dry tropical forest area (Murphy and Lugo, 1996). Nonetheless, current knowledge of the human and biophysical dimensions of changes in dry topical forests as well as the cumulative effects of these changes are, as yet, in the initial phases of academic discovery (Mooney et al., 1996; Sanchez—Azofeifa et al., 2005). Indeed, little is known about this ecosystem and few remnants exist (Instituto Alexander von Humboldt, 1998; Mendoza, 1999). Furthermore, this type of ecosystem is poorly represented in the portfolio of Colombia’s protected areas.
