Since the 1980s a number of important currents of opinion have been formed on the subject of the importance of regions in economic growth, due to the fact that they contribute in a positive way to national growth. For this reason this article analyzes the production structure of Santiago de Cali, categorized as a city-region, for the period 1990-2005. With a percentage matrix, nine highly sectors were determined that participate strongly in the municipality's added value, led principally by real estate services and trade. The location coefficient established comparative advantages in 25 branches of activity in relation to Colombia. For its part the specialization coefficient provided information on the diversification of the nation's economy, with an indicator of 0.42. Finally the Shift and Share method for the period under study determined that the economy of Cali grew at a rate below that of the national average, without succeeding in determining the structural and regional effects.
